I took a nap that afternoon and was sure glad I did because that was the last sleep I got for a while. I woke up and saw Dev standing on-top of a tool box with water everywhere trying to turn off the hot water heater that was leaking. I said to him, "why didn't you wake me up?" He then said, "you were tired and what could you have done that I couldn't have?" So Friday night we went over to our friends, Sam and Sheerstie's. I was having contractions that I thought were getting closer together but was thinking that I better get use to this because he's not coming for a while.
We got home and I couldn't sleep so I got out of bed around 2:30 am and Dev followed me. Dev made a spreadsheet to time the contractions. We watched the "Cosby Show", to try and distract me. Oddly enough, the show was a dream that one of the boys was having that all the men were pregnant and going into labor at the same time. We watched the "Cosby Show" and packed our bags (I didn't take Dev's advice that I should have, oops:)). I was having contractions 3-5 minutes apart from the time we got out of bed until 5:30 am when we went to the hospital. I didn't know for sure if I was in labor at that point but didn't care because if I wasn't I still wanted something to dull the pain.
I was dilated to a 4 and 90% effaced when we got to the hospital. I was pleasantly surprised because I didn't know if I was even dilated to a one. I got an epidural around 8:45 am. After that life was TONS better. Dr. Weibell came and broke my water at 9:30 and said I was progressing really well and should have a baby in 4-5 hours. Dev and I were both pleasantly surprised again. By about noon I was dilated to an 8. The nurse told me that the last part takes at most an hour, so I should be "complete" then. 3 pm rolls around and I'm still dilated to an 8. She didn't want to give me pitocin this late, so we kept waiting. 4:30 comes and she finally gave me some pitocin to hopefully speed things up. 5:30 comes and I'm not really changing.
When the new nurse, Cheryl, came on at 6pm she turned up the Pitocin. Around 6:30 my epidural medicine had ran out and the anesthesiologist was going to come by in about 15 minutes to give me some more medicine, so he told the nurse to just turn it off. By about 7:15 I was almost "complete" but had a lip. The anesthesiologist still hadn't come... The nurse was saying that she wanted to wait for a little bit for the lip to go away. 7:30 came and the lip went away and was talking about me pushing. Dev was telling the nurse (in a nice way) that we needed to figure something out because his wife needed some pain meds before the "grand finale". In the meantime she was telling me how to push, what was going to happen, and who was going to be in the room. Finally the anesthesiologist came at 7:50.
I then started pushing at 8. I pushed for an hour and fifteen minutes with just the nurse and Dev. Kohl was sideways, making things a little more difficult. In that time of pushing, he wasn't moving far. My temperature started to rise, which made Kohl's heart rate start to increase more and more. The nurse called Dr. Weibell around 8:15 to see what to do. Shortly after arriving he used the vacuum to get Kohl out. When that started to happen, three more nurses walk in. I knew something wasn't quite right due to the way Dr. Weibell was talking to the nurses, the feeling I got, and the obvious of more nurses walking in.
Kohl was born at 9:41 pm. After he came out Dr. Weibell instantly handed them to the nurses to get checked. He had some respiratory problems as well as low glucose (it was a 23). After a few long days in the NICU he is home and healthy!
